North Central HIDTA has recently established a new Crime Gun Intelligence program through funding from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), which allowed for two new Crime Gun Intelligence Officers (CGIOs) to join our team. Through a partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), our team will be working to prevent and reduce gun violence and other violent crime associated with drug trafficking. Our initiatives are required to provide seized firearm information which is provided to our CGIOs for the purpose of developing intelligence leads and strategic analysis.
The mission of this project is to close critical gaps in crime gun intelligence and drug intelligence. It focuses on supporting state and local law enforcement, as well as ATF and other federal law enforcement entities, to identify, disrupt and dismantle the most violent DTOs in the region and beyond.
CGICs are an interagency collaboration focused on the immediate collection, management, and analysis of crime gun evidence, such as shell casings, in real-time, to identify shooters, disrupt criminal activity, and to prevent future violence. CGICs rely on an ongoing collaboration between the ATF, local police department, the local crime laboratory, probation and parole, local police gang units, prosecuting attorneys, U.S. Attorney’s Office, crime analysts, community groups, and academic organizations.
NIBIN Sites
The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) is the only national network that allows for the capture and comparison of ballistic evidence to aid in solving and preventing violent crimes involving firearms.
Using NIBIN, our partner law enforcement agencies at the local, state, tribal and federal level can submit their cartridge casing evidence and seized crime guns into the network, allowing them to quickly identify possible matches with criminal evidence entered by other jurisdictions. ATF has worked to place the program in strategic locations of the country.
